president obama went to harvard and doing pretty well. you see mitt romney as well. >> i have interviewed him a few times now. he seems a perfectly nice, kind, well-intentioned guy. i think on the principle front, a little bit flip-floppy. you're not quite sure what he really stands for. but the real problem comes with what he says when he doesn't think the cameras are on him. we saw this yesterday with this video that came out, when he was pretty harsh. 47% of americans, half the country, are victims, living off the state, not paying tax, and completely disingenuous. most of those people do pay payroll tax or they are the elderly or veterans. it was a very clumsy thing to have done. you must feel offended when you hear him say something like that, don't you? >> here i go again, but i'm for mercy, i'm for seeing the best in people. >> being merciful towards mitt romney? >> in a presidential election, every sentence is scrutinized. they were knocking president obama the other day for the "you didn't build it" or whatever it is. that's not

now, has obama fixed it? no. he has not. but is mitt romney the answer? going back to the old republican ways that caused it in the first place? americans have very short attention spans. they usually can only remember about a year ago. they need to remember about four, five, six years ago of who caused this. [ applause ] >> let's go to our first audience member question. derek, you have a question. on the basis of rumors still flying around, the gentleman may run for office in 2016, what is your question? >> well, first, governor, how are you doing? >> good. >> i'd like to thank you for having the guts to serve in our armed forces. i think a lot of politicians and so-called statesmen ought to take a page out of your book. >> well, it's not a requirement. let's be fair. it's not a requirement to serve in the military to be the commander in chief because he's a civilian. maybe it's good for a little of experience having done it, but it is not a requirement. the constitution doesn't say you have to. >> anyway, we're not here to call you a hero. let's get yo

obama had a four-point bounce. very, very substantial. speaking of the election, though, i got in trouble the other day with my friend on "the professionals." of course you have no idea what i'm talking about. >> i have noddy what i'm talk about. >> i do. >> and i said something interesting, it wasn't interesting that they smacked me around pretty good. you contrast the first women about their speeches, i said does this country vote that way anymore? i want shareholder value. i don't care who his wife is. is that naive? they're both great women. is that dumb guy talking? >> i think it can enhance it. >> they both have great marriages. >> they're teaching us a little bit. >> they're giving us information we might not otherwise have gotten. that's important to women. we want to know the whole story. >> give him situation what he thinks and believes. i think you're right, look at michelle obama. ann romney. i spent time with both of them. they are both top notch, both of them. nobody can argue about that. it does give you as lara says a look

anybody obama does is wrong. he overstepped the bounds in my opinion when he the president seemed to be siding with the terrorists. >> are they expressing any regret with this? >> they are not. they believe they are being criticized for criticizing exactly the same thing that president obama ended up disavowing. what it makes it look like is that they are trying to pick a fight here with president obama on foreign policy. and that they were looking for something and this was out there and they did it and they acted too quickly. >> in these elections, as you know, doug, we often hear about it in october. right now, this is sort of a september surprise. is this likely to have a huge impact come november 6th? >> well, you toe, wolf, imagine if barack obama had not gotten osama bin laden and gadhafi. the killing of those two terrorists gives him a kind of foreign policy krecredential. is obama's egyptian policy working? egypt is a great friend. anwar sadat has been our great friend. as cnn is reporting so well, this

what will an obama-romney debate look like? >> i mean, i debated mitt maybe 11, 12 times in 2007, going into 2008. always did well. he won some of the debates, never lost one. he's a very, very sound, very comfortable debater. we know the president is. the president is an extraordinarily smart man. and they're very similar. they're both a little wankish. they like to get into the weeds a lot. they both want to understand very deeply what the policies are. they're both going to be enormously well prepared and i think they're very important. but ultimately i think the economy is going to decide this election. assuming no one of them wins or loses by a big margin in the debates, which i think they're going to be pretty even. this is going to come down to america's view of the economy and whether they want to give president obama four more years. if things remain the way they seem to be on friday with the unemployment numbers, i think the president has a hard time asking for four more years. >> but as far as those up decided voters
